We publish books that are meant to be held in the hand, made of pages that feel good to flip with fingers. We are interested in publishing works that require the form of a 'book' to do what they do.

If you would like to propose a book to NO Books, send a query note to christopherschaberg@gmail.com and yakich@hotmail.com and explain briefly what your book idea is, and how it fits into the publishing program of NO Books. If we like your idea, we'll request a full book proposal.

We generally print small runs (250 - 1000 copies, initially), but we put significant effort into editing, layout, & design.

MANUAL

We are excited to announce the second NO Book: Bhob Rainey's edited collection Manual, a supplemental book to The BSC's forthcoming album of the same name.

Manual is a combination book and full-length album focusing on the music and improvisational practice of the BSC, an eight-member electroacoustic ensemble formed by saxophonist and composer Bhob Rainey in 2000.

More than just music with copious liner notes, Manual examines the theory and practice of improvisation from both within and outside The BSC, encountering topics ranging from genealogy to architecture, the boundaries of sense to the benefits of failure, flows of energy to bouts of guilt.

The intersection and unfolding of ideas is often complex, but the writing in Manual is absent of jargon and obfuscating tomfoolery, aimed instead at encouraging serious but unpretentious discourse on non-standard musical practices and the works that emerge from them.

Airplane Reading

Our first book, Checking In / Checking Out, by Christopher Schaberg and Mark Yakich, will be available October 1, 2011.

This is a two-sided book that aims to rejuvenate airplane reading. One side, Checking In, relates behind-the-scenes stories of an ex-employee of United Airlines (2001-2003) at the Gallatin Field Airport outside Bozeman, Montana. The other side, Checking Out, tells the story of one man’s lifelong efforts to cure a fear of flying. With sincerity and irreverence, Checking In / Checking Out wrestles with issues of travel, work, technology, security, faith, reading, writing, and parenthood. Ultimately, the book opens up a space between the two sides, like a parallax, in which readers can become more mindful of their own experiences of air travel.
